LIBRARY users throughout Conwy are to await a final decision from the council on the future of the service.
Following a committee recommendation, user groups throughout the county will now wait for Cabinet approval on ideas for the future of their local libraries.
Area libraries at Abergele, Colwyn Bay, Llandudno and Llanrwst could be retained, while a new facility would be constructed or refurbished to serve communities in Conwy, Deganwy and Llandudno Junction. Facilities would be improved throughout the libraries, including the extension of opening hours to weekends.
In the other affected areas of Kinmel Bay, Cerrigydrudion, Penmaenmawr, Llanfairfechan and Penrhyn Bay, community libraries could be set up, with the council hopeful volunteers in facilities such as halls and schools could help run the services.
The recommendations, made by Conwy County Borough Council's Communities and Customers Overview and Scrutiny Committees, will go to Cabinet on December 13.
Cllr Myra Wigzell, who represents Penrhyn Bay on Llandudno Town Council, said the option of a community library may not suit the area. She felt many of the village's elderly residents would be happy to volunteer to run the service, but finding a space to provide the service would be difficult.
She said: “As for Penrhyn Bay library, I can't see anywhere that would be fit for the purpose. Glanwydden school is already very crowded and Creuddyn and the community centre are too far away from the village centre.”
