The perfect kitchen can take years of work. From earning money to have it built, to the design process, to opening up your home for builders and letting them turn your kitchen space into a building site for anything between a few weeks to a few months; it is hard work, but entirely worth it in the end. Nothing is more frustrating, then, than walking in to your kitchen to find that something isn’t working.
A lot of the time, briefly researching online can help you complete the repair on your own and have things in working order once again. However, you will often require the help of specialists. Here are five repairs you really shouldn’t try and master on your own.
1. Dishwasher
A broken dishwasher can have a huge impact on your kitchen; being greeted by a broken dishwasher isn’t a great way to finish your evening meal. Sometimes, a simple change of cycle or clean of the filter is all you need to ensure that your dishes are being cleaned thoroughly. For more a serious dishwasher repair job, though, you should never try and take matters into your own hands.
2. Washing machine
The washing machine is a convenience most of us couldn’t do without, so trying to do a load of washing and finding that your machine has died can be really frustrating. While you can do some minor checks (such as checking the plug is providing power, and changing the fuse) this type of job is best left to the pros. If the wall socket and the plug are both fine but your machine remains unresponsive, call in a specialist as soon as possible to avoid causing further damage to your machine.
3. Tumble drier
Just as important as the washing machine, the tumble drier is a vital feature in many of our kitchens. It is a great time saver, and is excellent for when you’re in a pinch and need something dried immediately. A common complaint of the tumble drier is a smell of burning; something which can be rectified by vacuuming out excess fluff. However, tumble driers can and do cause house fires, and a lack of burning smell is not necessarily indicative of a safe appliance. It is important to check with a specialist before assuming that your problem has been rectified; it could be a matter of life and death.
4. Oven
The oven is at the heart of every kitchen: it is the creator of all of your culinary masterpieces and the reason your family can eat hot meals every night. If your oven stops working, it is essential that it is fixed as soon as possible. To ensure that the repair is carried out properly, don’t hesitate to call a specialist. If you smell gas, turn off the gas supply to your oven immediately and call your local gas company.
5. Freezer
The freezer is the modern day time and money saver, allowing you to bulk buy and store as much as it can hold, safe in the knowledge that you have extended the use-by date by upwards of a month. A broken freezer can be dangerous; defrosted then re-frozen meat allows bacteria to grow and is a leading cause of food poisoning.
To maintain a healthy freezer, keep doors closed when not in use and clean any excess ice or frost immediately to prevent the door becoming blocked. For anything more serious than that, though, it is important not to attempt to fix it yourself. Not only could it be dangerous to the health of you and your family, but you could make things worse and end up using a lot more money having to buy a new freezer.
