Contrast Theatre Company’s production of Godspell raised the curtain on live theatre at the new-look Theatr Colwyn on Wednesday September 14.

While the actors were busy putting the finishing touches to their revival of the early 70s off-Broadway musical, technicians, designers and front of house workers were finalising this revived entertainment centre.

Godspell for those not familiar with the musical smash, is made up of a series of parables interspersed with a variety of modern music set primarily to lyrics from traditional hymns and explores the passion and crucifixion of Jesus.

Rhyl’s Mikey Wooster takes on the role of the savior responsible for teaching a group of secular members of society including taxman, hoodie, yuppie, and student the word of god.

He shines in the role with flawless vocals and outstanding delivery of often fast paced dialogue.

His pairing with the equally impressive, Ashley McAllister as Judas, particularly on the toe-tapping ‘All for the Best’, stand out as highlights, together of course with the full company’s interpretation of Godspell’s signature song ‘Day by Day’.

James Paggett proved memorable as a Jack-Sparrow inspired John the Baptist, Crayg Wellbeloved also stood out in his debut performance for Contrast with expert delivery Disney would be proud of.

Aaron Bevan, Susie Lydiate and Kate Russell, Rachel Potter and Lucy Connah effortlessly guided us through their own individual journey of enlightenment.

God however was not smiling on Chris Williams this opening night as he launched into his solo of ‘We Beseech Thee’ only for the orchestra of Trish Gaskell and Craig Price (Keyboards) Colin Hodson (Guitar) and Stuart Gaskell (Bass/Percussion) to fail to strike up due to an electrical hiccup – leaving Williams and the cast to suffer momentarily in silence before being aided by the assembled audience with rounds of enthusiastic applause.

I eagerly anticipate the next offering from this enthusiastic and talented theatre company and its diverse band of actors after they left me somewhat spell-bound by Godspell.
