CHESTER capitalised on their high tempo start last night to finish up as deserved winners.

Christian Smith's second minute header from Matty McGinn's corner, and McGinn's fourth minute spotkick were highlights of an electrifying start to the proceedings.

Kendal had no answer to the Blues dominant opening half performance which was capped by a magnificent finish from Matty McNeil who smashed home McGinn's 33rd minute cross.

Chester, who kept their fourth clean sheet and earned a fourth successive victory, retained a stranglehold after the break and extended their advantage three minutes into stoppage time courtesy of a thunderous finish from Iain Howard.

Club skipper and centre back George Horan was the only absentee from Saturday's 3-0 league win at Worksop Town as he was serving a one match suspension.

Midfielder Alex Brown returned to the starting line-up in place of Horan, with Michael Taylor and Christian Smith partnering one another in central defence.

The Blues couldn't have wished for a better start as they enjoyed a 2-0 lead after just four minutes.

Smith nodded home a powerful header from Matty McGinn's second minute corner to earn Chester a 1-0 lead in the second minute.

And Matty McGinn made it 2-0 just two minutes later when he converted his fifth penalty of the season and his sixth goal in seven games after Dan Dillon had handled a lob from Michael Powell.

The Blues were dictating play and mesmerising their visitors by driving forward at every opportunity.

Iain Howard picked out an inch perfect pass to dissect the Kendal rearguard in the 11th minute to find Chris Simm whose left wing cross found Booth, but the midfielder's goalbound header was pawed clear by visiting keeper Craig Dootson.

Kendal earned themselves some breathing space after 15 minutes when Keiron Walmsley hoisted a free kick towards Mark Jackson whose glancing header flew over the bar.

But Chester hit straight back with a blistering tempo aided by Howard and Booth on the flanks and a hunger from Michael Powell who received deserved applause from fans in the main stand after producing a superbly timed tackle on Danny Wisdom.

The match threatened to boil over in the 20th minute when Simm reacted angrily to a foul from experienced defender Marc Joseph which prompted Hyde referee Alan Clayton to intervene.

Howard provided Kendal with cause for concern in the 22nd minute with a dangerous left wing cross which sailed fractionally over the head of McNeil six yards from goal.

And Booth's left sided corner in the 28th minute found the head of McNeil at the back post, but he directed his effort wide of the mark.

Chester deservedly increased their account in the 33rd minute when McNeil connected with a pinpoint left wing cross from McGinn, smashing home his first time effort into the bottom right corner of the net.

Ciaran Donnelly responded for the visitors in the 35th minute when his long free kick was completely misjudged by Blues keeper John Danby who touched the effort wide of his left hand post.

But Simm countered two minutes later when he seized on a throughball on the left edge of the area before curling an angled shot just wide of the far post.

And Smith saw his glancing header from McGinn's 41st minute right-sided corner fly over the bar as the Blues continued to command the contest.

Kendal's Kevin Leadbetter produced the final shot of the opening half after bursting forward, but his 25 yard piledriver was steered well over the bar.

The visitors made a double substitution before the start of the second half, with Wayne Curtis and Ian Kilford replacing Alex Taylor and Dan Dillon respectively.

Kendal produced the first goalbound shot after the break, but Leadbetter's effort from 20 yards was held by Danby, and Leadbetter's 50th minute strike was also comfortably stopped by the Blues keeper.

But Chester came close to extending their lead  in the 52nd minute when Smith's header from Booth's corner was headed off the line by Jordan Tucker.

Substitute Jamie Rainford replaced Simm a minute later, and Brown flighted a 20 yard shot just over the bar as Chester attempted to increase their advantage.

Booth did well to turn his marker and create space before hoisting a right wing cross towards McNeil who steered his 62nd minute header wide of the right post.

Rainford was offered a scoring chance in the 64th minute when he latched onto a flick on from McNeil and beat a defender before seeing his close range shot saved by Dootson.

Substitute Wes Baynes replaced Booth in the 79th minute, and substitute Bradley Barnes replaced Brown towards the end of the match as Chester cruised to victory.
