NORMANS, Vikings and mailed knights gathered to invade a castle town once more.

Historical re-enactors from groups including Historia Normannis, the Marcher Freemen, Cwmwd Ial and the Coastal Hawks Project took to the streets of Conwy to bring its medieval heritage to life.

The fair, which coincided with the opening of the Conwy River Festival, offered the public the chance to watch footsoldiers in combat, talk to carpenters crafting weapons, and even fire arrows at knights in a shield wall.

Malcolm Hughes, Normannis regional officer of North Wales, said: "The medieval weekend in Conwy was a massive success for all involved. The event brought huge numbers of visitors to Conwy, and displays and events held by the re-enactment groups on the Quay were enjoyed by all."

"The display brought a great sense of historic atmosphere to the town - an atmosphere made immersive by the town's architecture and setting, both steeped in a wealth of history."

He added that he wished to thank the other societies involved in the weekend.
