Most people realise that performing arts is a great way to boost confidence, but it can also help with communication skills and an individual’s general use of the English language. Some English language courses operate alongside performing arts programmes for this precise reason, encouraging students to adhere to tight schedules and practice the discipline of learning lines. In this vein, performing arts courses often crossover with many other subjects.

Performing arts cover a variety of subjects including dance, singing, and drama. Having to perform in front of other people can be a test of strength for some people, but taking English courses in UK institutions running alongside performing arts can ease this burden, as students will get to know each other in a number of different environments, while learning and having fun.

Once the work begins, the process of learning lines for a play and the subsequent reading of these regularly can improve the spelling, vocabulary and grammar of most students. By placing emphasis on certain parts of the text, students learn to realise that communication is not just about talking and listening, but also about how information is conveyed to people. Performing arts is great for this as the students are encouraged to be outgoing and to express themselves visually as well as vocally. This obviously helps with any confidence issues the individual may have, as well as helping develop and improve other aspects of a person’s personality, such as imagination.

Choreography is vital when performing in front of an audience as part of a group. The staging of any show involves a certain amount of choreography which requires students adhere to and remember specific instructions whilst communicating as a group without words. The act of dancing in groups also helps to boost confidence, as the more practise that people put in, the better they become.

Working together towards the same goal can help to build friendships, and this in turn will improve communication skills, even in those people who are very shy, as they will have common topics to discuss both inside the classroom and out of it.

Seeing and feeling the performance come together at the end of the training period will make the students who took part realise that their hard work and effort was worthwhile. When the performance is over, an individual’s confidence should be sky high and best of all, the performer will have had the opportunity to practise and perfect key communication skills.

A child with confidence and good communication skills will develop strong social skills, as well as improved self-esteem, and these qualities will stand them in good stead for the rest of their lives and careers. This is a perfect reason to combine a summer learning language, with a summer of performing arts.
