Apple’s iPad launched a new generation of pcs, the tablet pcs, and these are rapidly becoming the most hip type of pcs in the market, especially amongst young users. Other manufacturers didn’t lose any time in launching their own versions of tablet pcs, in the race for first place.
Dell, one of the largest and most successful manufacturers of pcs and laptops worldwide, determined not to let Apple take the lead, presented an Android tablet that was entirely unique both as far as design and applications are concerned, the Dell Streak. Michael Dell himself first introduced it to reporters and manufacturers from all around the world, at CES 2010 and the device is already available in the UK, Germany and most European territories.
First and foremost, its uniqueness lies in its screen. Dell Streak was the first tablet pc with a multitouch high resolution screen that was not larger than 5 inches and also the first to be covered by Gorilla Glass. This makes it entirely resistant to scratches and very hard to break.
Its second innovation is the fact that it also acts as a smartphone, something which effectively means that it can be used as a mobile with GSM/EDGE/HSPA network connection.
Its third unique feature is its weight. Just under 220 grams Dell Streak fits in handbags, purses and even pockets. Such a tiny device and still, it manages to include two cameras of 5megapixels, carry out videocalls and support WiFi, Bluetooth and GPS connections. To top it all, it also offers a 16GB capacity that can extend to 32GBs thanks to its microSD port. Media files stored in this tablet pc can be projected through a TV set or ordinary pc thanks to its HDMI adaptor
The main advantage of a Dell Streak over an iPad though is its dual function. If you own a Dell Streak you no longer need to also carry a phone with you. This is precisely how Dell hopes to lure its customers, and to move some Apple customers over to its own camp.
Other winning features of the Dell Streak is its GPS function, its ebook reader application and its sophisticate widgets such as gaming, facebook, weather, twitter –to name but a few. It fact is can host all 100,000 (or more) applications of the Android market and this combined with its multi touch technology can transform it into one of the most exciting gaming devices.
For those who are still undecided between tablet pcs, it should be clear by now that the Dell Streak is no ordinary tablet.
