PEOPLE are being invited to a weekend of events to help a Chester school celebrate a key birthday.

The King’s School, in Wrexham Road, was first opened 50 years ago, in 1960, by The Queen Mother.

To commemorate the anniversary, school officials will host an anniversary concert on Friday, September 10, at 7pm. Tickets are £5 and are available on the door.

On Saturday 11, at 10am, the Rt Hon Frank Field MP will officially unveil the 50th anniversary school sculpture, designed by pupils. There will also be an open school day, giving the community a chance to see photographs, past uniforms and memorabilia from the previous 50 years. There will be an opportunity to buy memorabilia, a commemorative magazine or a DVD of the school’s history. The exhibition is free of charge and will be open from 10am until 3pm.

That evening there will be an anniversary ball with more than 400 guests enjoying a five-course meal and music.

From 10am on Sunday, September 12, there will be a Sunday Eucharist Service at Chester Cathedral. And from 9am until 11am the same day, the Boathouse will host a rowing event, with The Old King’s Scholars VIII versus current pupils VIII as the highlight of the morning.

Finally, men’s and ladies hockey, tennis and football tournaments are scheduled for 10am the same day. Old King’s Scholars wishing to participate can do so for free.
