STUDENTS at the University of Chester have voiced helpful views on their programmes in this year’s National Student Survey results.

Organisers of the survey set a 50 per cent return rate for each institution but for the first time Chester has moved up to the 60s – with 60 per cent of final year students completing the survey, an improvement on last year.

Highlights included 100 per cent of students surveyed taking Physical Geography agreeing that staff were enthusiastic about what they were teaching; the criteria used in marking had been made clear in advance and that they received sufficient advice and support in their studies.

A total of 100 per cent of history students surveyed decided that staff were “good at explaining things.” Theology and Religious Studies staff scored top marks for being “enthusiastic about their teaching” and 100 per cent of students surveyed in

Social Work said they were “able to access specialised equipment, facilities or rooms when they needed to.”

An impressive 97 per cent of students surveyed studying English said the course was well organised and ran smoothly and 96 per cent agreed that the course was intellectually stimulating; they had been able to contact staff when they needed to; staff were good at explaining things and they were satisfied with the quality of the course.

Theology and religious studies students scored staff 96 per cent for making the subject interesting; explaining things well and for the overall satisfaction of the course. History students scored their course 96 per cent for being intellectually stimulating.

Jane Thomas, academic development manager at the University of Chester, said: “We are pleased that so many of our students took the time to complete the survey, which provides future students with crucial information for their study choices, as well as giving the University valuable feedback on their student experience.”

Professor Tim Wheeler, vice-chancellor, said: “The university continually strives to give its students the best learning experience, combined with a supportive environment and we are pleased to see our commitment to this recognised.”
