A DEDICATED day to celebrate the achievement of women from across Chester was a “roaring success”, according to organisers.
Chester Women’s Aid arranged an event at the Community Centre in Westminster Road, Hoole, to mark International Women’s Day.
Chester MP Christine Russell officially opened the Recycling and Re-invention-themed event which featured stalls, information displays and performances.
Hoole singers, a Chester-based belly dancing group and the sign choir from Singing Hands group from Ellesmere Port provided entertainment at the event.
Chester Women’s Aid treasurer Andrea Beck said: “The day was a great success and we have had a lot of positive feedback from everyone.
“We had a lot more people turn up at the event than the previous year and there were a lot of great comments left on our feedback graffiti wall from all of those who attended the day.”
The event helped to raise money to support women and children in crisis as a result of domestic violence and to fund refuges in Chester and Ellesmere Port.
Sheila Brookes, who chairs Chester Women’s Aid, said: “In other parts of the world International Women’s Day on March 8 is a public holiday and our event is the closest we can get in this country to celebrating all the amazing women who contribute so much to the communities we live in.”
Entrance was free and a wide range of stalls included toys, books, crafts, jewellery, bric-a-brac, raffle, displays and activities.
